Wednesday & Stranger Things Popularity Record Has Been Beaten By A New Netflix Show

A new Netflix series is off to a roaring start, having already beaten an impressive record previously held by Wednesday and Stranger Things.

One Piece is off to a roaring start, as the Netflix adaptation has already beaten a record set by Wednesday and Stranger Things. A fantasy adventure developed by Steven Maeda and Matt Owens, the live-action series is based on the ongoing manga of the same name. The premise focuses on the adventures of the Straw Hat Pirates, who are searching for a fabled treasure that will result in their captain, Monkey D. Luffy, becoming King of the Pirates. The series, which has manga creator Eiichiro Oda as a consultant, debuted to largely positive reviews on August 31.

According to FlixPatrol, which provides data on VOD and streaming charts, One Piece season 1 has already beaten a record set by fellow Netflix shows Wednesday and Stranger Things season 4. The adaptation has taken the top spot on Netflix’s charts in 84 countries. Wednesday and Stranger Things season 4, meanwhile, came in at number one in 83 countries on their debut weekends.

One Piece’s Live-Action Series Is Helped By Positive Reviews

The adaptation has premiered to positive reviews, with an 84% score on Rotten Tomatoes based on 40 reviews. The consensus finds that the series stays true to the heart of the source material, with charm and a sense of sincerity that appeals to both long-time and new viewers. The cast of One Piece, which includes Iñaki Godoy, Emily Rudd, Mackenyu, Jacob Romero Gibson, and Taz Skylar, also received positive assessments.

Netflix has had difficulty in building successful shows based on anime and manga. Titles like Death Note have debuted and passed without much fanfare. On the more extreme end, a high-profile adaptation of Cowboy Bepop was cancelled after just one season. The early signs indicate that One Piece is helping to turn the tide.

Other indicators will soon follow, such as how long One Piece will remain dominant on the Netflix charts and whether it has a robust Top Ten presence in Nielsen’s streaming tracks. If it does, then it serves as a strong indication of the fact that the live-action fantasy will be renewed for a second installment.
