Frieza’s Huge Dragon Ball Super Powerup Was Hinted At Earlier Than Fans think

Frieza’s surprise training in another Room of Spirit of Time was alluded to more than 30 chapters before Frieza Black debuted in Dragon Ball Super.

Although a tremendous moment, how Frieza unlocked his Black form in Dragon Ball Super felt completely random and even lazy writing-wise. However, the series actually perfectly foreshadowed this would happen in an earlier saga when Goku underwent special training with Galactic Patrolman Merus.

Black Frieza made his first appearance in Dragon Ball Super chapter 86 by story writer Akira Toriyama and artist Toyotarou. When showcasing his new form to a shocked Goku and Vegeta, the villain explained that he had stumbled upon a Room of Spirit and Time on one of the planets that he had conquered and managed to complete 10 years of intense training there. This may have felt like a stretch at the time since it was assumed that Dragon Ball only had one Room of Spirit and Time at Kami’s lookout. However, this isn’t actually the case according to an earlier Dragon Ball Super chapter.

Dragon Ball Super Showed Another Room of Spirit & Time

When Moro the Planet Eater was still ravaging the galaxy during the Galactic Patrol Prisoner Saga, Goku enlisted the help of Galactic Patrolman Merus to teach him how to master Ultra Instinct. Eventually, Merus moved their training to a Room of Spirit and Time housed in a pyramid-like structure on a completely separate planet other than Earth in chapter 52. There, Goku learns that one day in this particular Room of Spirit and Time equals three days of training in the real world, as opposed to Kami’s chamber, where one year of training can be completed in one day.

Although not as powerful, Merus’ chamber still proved that there was more than just one in the galaxy. So it wouldn’t be so out of the ordinary that there could be others out there for Frieza to find and train in, which he obviously did. Moreover, the fact that Merus’ chamber was much weaker than the one on Kami’s lookout meant that there could be one powerful enough to gain an equivalent of 10 years of training like Frieza. The question remains, however, who built Merus’ chamber, especially since it was on an uninhabited planet, as well as who built the one that Frieza trained in for an equivalent of 10 years.

Frieza’s New Dragon Ball Super Form Isn’t Lazy Writing

Although some fans might still have difficulty grappling with the fact that Frieza just underwent a massive amount of training to unlock yet another transformation, at least they can now get behind the idea that it was done in a Room of Spirit and Time. After all, it’s easier to accept massive plot twists like this one when they are introduced or alluded to earlier in a completely unrelated storyline. That’s because they don’t feel like random add-ons or last-minute additions to justify another saga. Instead, they feel much more purposeful and likely, and that’s what Dragon Ball Super accomplished by introducing Meerus’ Room of Spirit and Time during the Galactic Patrol Prisoner Saga long before Black Frieza’s debut at the tail end of the Granolah The Survivor Saga.
