A line from Zoro in Netflix’s live-action One Piece TV show secretly foreshadows an upcoming fight that will be his best action sequence in season 2.
Zoro will have a major new opponent for One Piece season 2, and a cute insult in Netflix’s live-action series perfectly foreshadows this future enemy. Despite the challenges of adapting stretchy limbs and oral swordsmanship, Netflix’s One Piece refuses to skimp on intense action, and Mackenyu’s Roronoa Zoro is arguably the MVP of season 1’s fight sequences. Across One Piece‘s first eight episodes, Zoro faces Mr. 7 from the mysterious Baroque Works organization, Warlord of the Sea Dracule Mihawk, numerous fish-men from the Arlong Pirates, and several other unlucky victims of his three-sword style.
Nevertheless, those battles will almost certainly pale in comparison to a fight Zoro will have in One Piece season 2, which is looking increasingly likely to happen as Netflix’s show enjoys continued success on the streaming platform. Mr. 7’s fleeting cameo all but confirms Baroque Works’ leader, Crocodile, as One Piece season 2’s major villain, and his band of shady criminals will be the Straw Hat Pirates’ toughest opponents yet. Curiously, a line of dialogue Mackenyu’s Zoro utters in season 1 serves as clever foreshadowing for the Baroque Works member Zoro will duel in One Piece‘s future.
One Piece Foreshadows Zoro Vs. Mr. 1 For Season 2
In One Piece episode 1, Roronoa Zoro is confronted by Mr. 7, who doesn’t take kindly to the swordsman’s rejection of a Baroque Works membership t-shirt. Zoro wins the resulting fight with relative ease, but makes sure to drop an amusing insult before cutting his opponent down. Noting this so-called “Mr. 7” has the number tattooed on his face, Zoro raises his middle finger and quips, “My favorite is number one.” On the surface, this line refers to Zoro’s crude hand gesture. Looking deeper, it hints toward Zoro vs. Mr. 1 in One Piece season 2.
Baroque Works enjoys a far bigger presence in One Piece after Luffy’s crew enters the Grand Line, culminating with each of the Straw Hats facing off against a top-tier member from the Baroque Works hierarchy. Roronoa Zoro’s one-on-one duel is against Crocodile’s right-hand man, who goes by the code name “Mr. 1.” Zoro’s “my favorite is number one” line in Netflix’s One Piece does, therefore, carry a dual meaning. On one hand, it’s a cute middle finger gag; on the other, this insult is another way of saying Mr. 7 is no match for Zoro, and his true Baroque Works opponent will be Mr. 1, who awaits in One Piece season 2.
Zoro Vs. Mr. 1 Creates A Challenge For Netflix’s One Piece Season 2
Between Dracule Mihawk and Cabaji, Roronoa Zoro’s live-action fights provide a worthy demonstration of the character’s anime swordsmanship, but by setting up Zoro vs. Mr. 1 for One Piece season 2, the Netflix series also sets itself a huge challenge. Most of Zoro’s fights in One Piece season 1 are one-sided, with Zoro far stronger than all of his opponents, except for Dracule Mihawk, who is far stronger than he. Zoro vs. Mr. 1 is a much closer clash, with the two fighters competing on relatively equal footing. This means a longer, far more intense live-action battle is required.
Moreover, Mr. 1’s One Piece Devil Fruit ability allows him to create blades from body parts. Zoro crossing swords with a man whose arms and legs are literally his weapons poses a huge visual challenge for One Piece in live-action. Defeating Mr. 1 represents a significant escalation in difficulty compared to the Straw Hat first mate’s past fights, and Netflix’s adaptation must convey that by escalating the stunts, visuals, and scope compared to Zoro’s battles throughout One Piece season 1.
