Carmela Chillery Watson and her mother, Lucy, recently completed an inspiring challenge to raise money for Muscular Dystrophy UK. Over a period of 30 days, the dynamic duo dressed up as Wonder Woman and walked one kilometer every day. This was an impressive feat considering that Carmela has LMNA Congenital Muscular Dystrophy, which is a genetic condition that weakens the muscles over time. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Carmela’s father, Darren, has been living in a shed to ensure that she remains safe from the virus.
During the challenge, the actress Gal Gadot, who played Wonder Woman in the recent movie, showed her support by calling Carmela her “real wonder girl” on social media. This boosted Carmela’s spirits and encouraged her to keep going. On a recent episode of The One Show, Carmela expressed her gratitude to Gadot for inspiring her to keep fighting and doing her exercises despite her condition. Gadot was moved to tears by Carmela’s words, which were spoken from her Wonder Woman-themed bedroom.

The much-awaited release of Wonder Woman 1984, starring Gal Gadot as the legendary superhero, is almost here. Carmela has a personal connection with Wonder Woman as dressing up as her has a special significance for her. Carmela was diagnosed with LMNA Congenital Muscular Dystrophy, a genetic condition that causes a gradual decline in muscle strength and function, in 2017. Despite this, Carmela has continued to make an impact. She and her mother Lucy walked one kilometer every day for 30 days to raise money for Muscular Dystrophy UK. Their efforts caught the attention of Gal Gadot, who tweeted that Carmela was her “real wonder girl” just nine days into the challenge.
Oh my goodness, this is such fantastic news! Carmela and her lovely mother Lucy went above and beyond by dressing up as the iconic Wonder Woman and taking a one-kilometer walk every day for 30 consecutive days. They did this to support Muscular Dystrophy UK and it’s truly inspiring to witness their unwavering dedication towards the cause. Kudos to them both!
Gal took to Twitter after nine days of challenge and hailed Carmela as her “real wonder girl.” Muscular dystrophy is a set of inherited genetic conditions that gradually lead to muscle weakening and disability, which ultimately could be life-threatening. Although treatment can help in managing many symptoms, there is still no cure for MD. Gal generously donated £3,442 to Carmela’s fundraising campaign and helped her surpass her initial goal of £6,000 by raising almost £15,000. Muscular Dystrophy UK’s CEO Catherine Woodhead expressed her gratitude towards the Wonder Woman cast for their continuous support. The money raised by Carmela and her team will significantly contribute to funding research into treatments and cures for people with muscle-wasting conditions. Gal revealed that only her eldest daughter Alma watched her first WW movie while her youngest, Maya, has yet to see it. Despite the challenges of filming the sequel, Gal performed most of her stunts herself. You can access Carmela’s fundraising page on JustGiving.
Gal talked about the sequel movie and how it was quite a difficult task that demanded a lot of effort. She also revealed that she performs most of the stunts in the film, given her background in the Israeli military for a few years.
