Dragon Ball: Frieza Has Always Been A Terrible Villain

Dragon Ball: Frieza has always been a terrible villain

While the Heeters‘ Gas and Goku’s father Bardock fight in the past in Dragon Ball SuperGas‘ taunts in the middle of the battle reveal just how bad Frieza is at keeping his plans a secret.

The recent flashbacks in Dragon Ball Super have changed a lot of what fans thought they knew about Bardock, but one of the biggest changes has to do with Frieza’s inability to keep his genocidal plans a secret from his future victims.

As a character, Bardock was created for the Dragon Ball Z anime, and did not appear in the manga previously. Bardock’s first appearances in the anime gave him a much ruder personality than his lovable son would have. His reasons for sending Goku away in a small space capsule are also generated from visions of the future, where he sees the destruction of his home planet and, moments before his death, a glimpse of the hero Goku would become and his final victory over Frieza. While some of these elements have been preserved in Bardock’s re-imagining of the Dragon Ball Super manga, others have changed radically, such as Bardock’s reasons for being suspicious of Frieza.

Chapter 83 of the Dragon Ball Super manga by Akira Toriyama and Toyotaro changes a lot about Bardock. Originally sent to the Cereal Planet to help win him over as part of a squad of transforming Oozarus SaiyansBardock encounters a woman and a small child, who remind him of his own family. Bardock tries to hide them as they are some of the only survivors, but he ends up being forced into a confrontation with Gas of the Heeters group. Despite the fact that the Heeters don’t seem to particularly like Frieza, they have a lot of business dealings with the tyrant, a fact that somehow lets Gas know what should have been one of the best-kept secrets in Universe 7, Frieza’s plan to wipe out Planet Vegeta. And the Heeters don’t just know that the Saiyans may all be dead soon; Elec specifically mentions the cover story of the “meteor” that was fed to the rest of surviving Saiyans like Vegeta, implying a rather intimate knowledge of the plan.

Frieza doesn’t trust others, especially business partners who owe him little loyalty, so it’s a mystery how Gas came to know of this plan. The particular sentence seems to suggest that Frieza has done this sort of thing before, but if that were the case, one would expect more Saiyans to be suspicious. Regardless of how he found out, Gas pointed Frieza’s hand at Bardock, which eventually motivates him to throw Goku away from Earth to ensure his survival. It’s a pretty substantial change from the visions of the future that the anime has provided, but it’s arguably a better story. Now, Bardock can only save Goku’s life because he was willing to risk his own to save Granola. Ironically, Granola would become a great enemy of Goku. There’s an element of divine providence that really fits the epic, mythical hero vibe Dragon Ball Super is in.

Bardock’s flashbacks in Dragon Ball Super have come to an end for now, just in time for a poetic rematch between his son and Gas at the same location. Frieza’s loose lips about the Saiyan Genocide plans eventually came back to haunt him on Namek. The only question now is whether Frieza has learned his lesson, or whether Gas will have some equally horrific tease ready for Goku in the present that can kick-start the next arc.
