Vegeta changed a lot during Dragon Ball Z, and his softening and feelings for Bulma were thanks to her responding to him.
Dragon Ball Z is primarily known for one thing: epic and dynamic battles between the galaxy’s mightiest warriors. While these characters are all iconic, they’re not always developed on screen. Essentially, the series is not just a story about fighting, but a fight with a story, leading to some key elements not being said or shown. One is when and why Vegeta fell in love with Bulma!
The Prince of the Saiyans is incredibly arrogant, and initially has no interest in saving or protecting the Earth and its inhabitants. This cold, heartless behavior continues over the years, but Vegeta still finds in his heart a space to fall in love, marry, and even have a family with Bulma. The reason may be based on how much she can handle his personality, as well as reciprocate in kind with a little of her own attitude.
When did Bulma and Vegeta get together?
When he first appears, Vegeta is a bloodthirsty and ruthless Saiyan warrior with little regard for the value of life. It is during the “Frieza Saga” that however, he begins to soften, renouncing his promise to kill Krillin to fight alongside him against Frieza’s forces. It is around this time that Bulma notices an attraction to the Prince of Saiyans, which she suspects is not as bad as it seems. This is somewhat confirmed when Vegeta tells Goku that his attitude towards life was due to the treatment of the Saiyans at Frieza’s hands.
Vegeta would later move to Earth, courtesy of Bulma and the Capsule Corporation. She tending to his injuries when he received serious injuries only strengthened their reluctant bond, eventually resulting in Bulma breaking up with Yamcha and eventually conceiving a child with Vegeta. This initially isn’t enough to reunite them, but upon seeing what his son Trunks would become, the brash Vegeta eventually marries and falls truly in love with Bulma.
Vegeta chose Bulma for her courage
Vegeta, due to his arrogance, is incredibly proud and commanding Bulma at first. Of course, his equally stubborn nature means she gives him a taste of his own medicine, especially when he refuses to stop training and healing from his injuries. This enthusiasm for an argument is exactly why Vegeta is attracted to her, and he does need such traits in a wife.
As Vegeta would later relay to Goku in Dragon Ball Super, male Saiyans are only attracted to strong-willed women. This explains Goku’s marriage to Chi-Chi, though it questions Goku’s demure mother. Vegeta claims to quite like Bulma’s malice, explaining why they still seem to argue so much. So when she first spoke to him on Namek, and later on Earth, it was probably a great excitement for him. Needless to say, dating the Prince of Saiyans is a battle in itself, and only a woman as tough as Bulma could put him into submission.
