One Piece: Will Luffy Get More Gears In The Future?

Gear Fifth looks like it might be Luffy’s ultimate technique, but is something even stronger already on the way?

Monkey D. Luffy, the man who wants to become the Pirate King, started his journey from East Blue, one of the weakest seas in the series. However, as he traveled from East Blue to the Grand Line, more powerful enemies came his way, and his level of strength was trifling to them.

To become better able to defeat powerful enemies and protect his crew, Luffy developed his power and obtained new forms and abilities in the form of gears. These gears allowed him to better utilize his devil fruit as he battled stronger and stronger enemies. With the recent occurrence in the One Piece anime series, fans saw Luffy obtain a new gear, Gear Fifth, which is his most powerful gear yet. As Luffy awakened Gear Fifth in a bout against Kaido, fans can only wonder whether there will be other gears for him to awaken.

The Evolution Of Luffy’s Gears

After Luffy’s base form, Luffy showcased Gear Second and Third during the Enies Lobby arc. Gear Second allows him to increase the flow of his blood, granting him more strength and speed. During the same fight against CP9, the government assassins, Luffy showcased Gear Third. This gear allows him to inflate his bones by blowing air into them. The bones then become gigantic and pack a lot of power. With Gear Second, Gear Third, and Haki, Luffy was able to defeat most of his enemies. However, against the warlord, Heavenly Demon Donquioxte Doflamingo, it was far from enough.

To battle Doflamingo, Luffy had to use Gear Four, a technique that was developed during his two-year training with the Dark King Rayleigh. Like Gear Third, Luffy blows into his arms; however, he inflates his muscles rather than his bones and covers his body with Armament Haki. After covering his body with Armament Haki, Luffy takes one of three forms: Boundman, Tankman, or Snakeman.

Luffy’s Boundman form makes him similar to a rubber ball. By retracting his arms, he is able to unleash devastating blows, and by retracting his legs, he is able to fly with elastic power. Moreover, Luffy’s defensive and offensive capabilities have greatly increased. His other forms, Tankman and Snakeman, focus on defense and offense, respectively. With Snakeman, Luffy’s attacks are capable of changing their trajectory mid-air.

Luffy’s Current Gear Fifth

During the battle against Kaido, Luffy awakened his devil fruit. The fruit that has always been thought to be the Gomu Gomu no Mi turned out to be the Hito Hito no Mi, model: Nika. With his devil fruit awakening, Luffy became more than a rubber human; he became the warrior of liberation and the sun god Nika, who fights freely without a care in the world. With Gear Fifth, Luffy is able to manipulate his surroundings, similar to a paramecia. His Gear Fifth power is described as ‘the most ridiculous power in the world’. This is because the things he can do with Gear Fifth border on being limitless.

Will Luffy Get More Gears In The Future?

Luffy always showcased new gears when he faced an enemy that he was unable to defeat. And so, his gears evolved out of necessity. To face and defeat Kaido, Luffy awakened Gear Fifth. However, as Kaido is not the final villain of the story, fans speculate that Luffy will need to awaken more gears to face stronger enemies.

While this is a degree of possibility, Luffy proclaimed Gear Fifth to be his final form. Moreover, as seen with past gears, Luffy needs time to adapt to his new power. In terms of using Haki and Gear Fifth, Luffy is nowhere near his peak. To battle stronger enemies, Luffy could master his use of Gear Fifth and take his Haki to a whole other level. As Kaido previously stated, although he can infuse conquerors’ Haki into his punches, Luffy’s use of the technique needs a lot of work. As Luffy has proclaimed the awakening of his devil fruit to be his peak, it is unlikely that he will receive further gears in the future. To battle stronger enemies, Luffy may simply develop different forms with Gear Fifth, as he did with Gear Fourth.
