A flirty female sea lion was spotted playfully slapping her friend on the head before the boisterous pair agreed to kiss and make up with a loving smooch.

The seductive sea lion was photographed playing around on the cold, windy rocks at Volunteer Point, East Falklands, where she embraced her chum.

The pictures were taken by Derek Pettersson, 54, who runs a tourist lodge two miles away from coast where the sea lions had gathered.

Derek, owner of Volunteer point, said: ‘It looks like they’re hugging and going in for a kiss. They are mostly just playing, even when the slap happened. It wouldn’t have been hard, just playful.

‘At this time of year, when there are not so many large males around, the females are often in groups and interact like this. We have a whole range of wildlife in the Falkland Islands and it’s always a pleasure to be able to capture these beautiful moments.’

Sea lions are predators that feed on over 50 species of fish, and can live for 20-30 years, according to the Seal Sitters website.

They can grow to nearly 63 stone and mostly eat squids, octopuses, hake and herring – but are also hunt down salmon and other bottom-dwelling fish.
