Is Figarland Garling the one who gave Whitebeard the scar?
With the debut of Garling Figarland, many people are theorizing about his role in the God Valley Incident. And a bunch of people are running with the theory that he scarred Whitebeard.
Although it is a cool theory and would be a really well done bit of foreshadowing if the person Whitebeard referred to when he met Shanks is Chapter 434 was Garling, the theory does not really work if you put the timeline together.
Let’s start with Whitebeard‘s scars. He has 3 scars; an L shaped scar, an X on his left chest, and a scar right down the middle.
For starters, the conversation Roger and Whitebeard had after he became Pirate King.
Roger and Whitebeard talked over sake cups, and we can see that Whitebeard definitely does not have the big L shaped scar on his right side is not there. In the anime when this panel took place the only scar Whitebeard had was the one down the middle, but obviously not going to use that as concrete evidence of anything.
This panel from the fight also gives us a pretty solid look at the right side of Whitebeard’s chest, and not a sign of an L scar anywhere.
Go back further to his duel with Roger. Here is Roger, Whitebeard, and Oden talking after the fight.
Whitebeard clearly does not have the scar yet in the middle of his chest. And we know that the scar could not have come from God Valley, because Shanks was an infant at that point. Shanks and Buggy are little cabin boys when this fight took place, so confirmed not the middle scar either.
And while there’s not a very clear look at the left side of his chest that I can find from the Oden flashback, I think we’d be stretching a lot to say that it’s there considering how far it goes over into the middle of his chest (well past his pecs).
Not here on the cover.
Not here either with a pretty good look at his shirt pretty far open.
TL;DR
It’s a fun theory, but it would require some serious retconning if Figarland gave Whitebeard one of his 3 prominent chest scars. Consider this effectively debunked.
