Saturn’s demonic powers might not stem from a devil fruit.
One Piece’s Egghead Island is currently incredibly intense and fans are waiting to see this phenomenal arc continue as the war on Egghead Island rages on. With the arrival of the Navy, led by Kizaru, and one of the Five Elders, Saturn, on Egghead, fans knew that an all-out war would break out that would see all major characters take part in the battle.
That is precisely what happened and, even though Luffy was fighting against Kizaru until recently, Saturn was the main player that everyone had their eyes on. In One Piece chapter 1094, Saturn finally made his move and decided to show up on Egghead, revealing his powers along the way. The vast majority of the fans believe that Saturn possesses tremendous Devil Fruit powers, however, there is an equally exciting idea that suggests that Saturn might not have a Devil Fruit after all.
Saturn’s Transformation
Saturn initially did not want to join the war on Egghead Island. His goal was to leave the Marines, especially Kizaru, to the mission of assassinating Vegapunk and securing all the interests of the Navy. However, with Luffy on the island, things did not go according to the plan of the Marines. Vegapunk quickly turned the Pacifistas back to his side and it looked as if Luffy and his group were going to win. That is precisely what called Saturn into action, and One Piece chapter 1094 saw him summon himself to Egghead Island. Saturn used some sort of demonic summoning circle which presented itself on egghead and he was able to teleport through it.
He appeared on the island in his transformed state and fans finally got to see him utilize his powers for the very first time in the entire story. As was evident in the chapter, Saturn had a very monstrous appearance. His body was absolutely massive, towering over the likes of the Straw Hat Pirates. His lower half was that of a spider and he had huge bull horns coming from his head. Clearly, this was a sign of a Devil Fruit power. Fans were absolutely shocked to see Saturn utilize his powers so early in the arc and, from here onwards, this is only going to get even messier, since there doesn’t appear to be any major power left to challenge him.
Saturn’s Powers
When one looks at the powers that Saturn has, it is very clear that he has something akin to a Devil Fruit at his disposal. The first power that fans saw him use in One Piece after 1095 was a summoning circle. The circle allowed him to teleport himself to Egghead Island and his ominous presence was felt all over the island, even by non-combatants. Another ability that Saturn used was the power to blow the heads off of people. One marine, who was rather weak, merely looked at him and had his head blown off.
This was quite shocking as fans have not seen such power ever in the world of One Piece. In One Piece chapter 1095, Saturn took things a step further and revealed more of his powers. Now, on top of being able to strike people’s heads off just by his gaze, Saturn also utilized the power to freeze people in their places. This is an incredibly powerful ability as it works on even strong individuals, such as Sanji. The third strongest member of the Straw Hat crew was completely frozen in place when hit with Saturn’s powers and was unable to break free. This suggests that Saturn has multiple powers up his sleeve and these powers cannot be underestimated. Furthermore, Saturn was also shown to have a tremendously powerful healing factor. Even though Bonney stabbed him right in the chest with a massive sword, his body healed within a matter of seconds and all the blood simply vanished.
Does Saturn Have A Devil Fruit?
For quite a while, fans have been debating as to whether Saturn has a Devil Fruit or not. Fans know that he is the Ushi Oni, or Gyuki. This is a powerful creature that exists in Japanese folklore and this Yokai is tremendously dangerous. It is known to spew poison and eat the flesh of humans, which it absolutely enjoys.
On top of that, it is believed that those who look at the Ushi Oni, die in an instant and this is somewhat similar to the power that Saturn showed, which was capable of blowing off the heads of people. Furthermore, another incredible ability that the Ushi Oni has is being able to freeze those who make eye contact with it. Once again, this was seen in the previous chapter, when Saturn was able to freeze the entirety of the Straw Heart group that were present in front of him.
Even someone as strong as Sanji was not able to move. It is quite clear that Saturn has the power of Ushi Oni, however, that does not necessarily mean that he has a Devil Fruit. Of course, this would confuse fans as to how that could be the case, however, but if one looks at what kind of power Saturn holds and who he is serving, then a whole new door of explanations opens up and they are certainly very interesting.
Why Saturn Might Not Have A Devil Fruit
Saturn might not possess a Devil Fruit power, after all. The very first hint that fans got was that when Saturn was introduced, the name of his Devil Fruit was not revealed. This is very strange and something that Oda rarely does. Even though Oda has introduced characters without revealing their Devil Fruits, such as Kaido, when he gives a proper character description card with the character, they usually have Devil Fruits mentioned, as was seen with the Blackbeard Pirates on the Pirate Island. For some reason, Saturn did not have his power mentioned.
While this could simply be because Oda wants to keep it a secret at the moment, it could also be because he simply does not possess one. Furthermore, Saturn used the powers of a summoning circle in the chapter and, no matter what Devil Fruit one wields, this ability is rather bizarre. This is something that fans have never seen in the story before and it has something to do with the Gorosei, given that the circle had the number five engraved in it.
As to how Saturn could have these powers without even eating a Devil Fruit, the explanation is very simple. The one who sits atop the world, Imu, could be the one who provided Saturn with these powers. If Imu is the Sea Devil, then these powers would easily be accessible to him. He could have bestowed his five best guards, the Five Elders, with powers without giving them Devil Fruits and that is certainly something very interesting for the fans to consider. This would mean that these characters are incarnations of the devils themselves, instead of simply being people with the powers of Devil Fruits. Only time can tell what powers Saturn and the other members of the Five Elders possess.
One Piece is available to read via Viz Media. The series can be read by the fans officially and for free on the Shonen Jump and the Manga Plus app. The release date for the next chapter of One Piece, One Piece 1095, is set to be October 15, 2023.
