Chris Paul, one of the prominent point guards of the NBA, stated that at one point, he almost became a player for the Miami Heat.
In the podcast The Why with Dwyane Wade, Paul revealed the intriguing possibility from history.
The move was slated to take place during the era of the “Big Three” in the Miami Heat, which brought together LeBron James, Dwyane Wade, and Chris Bosh. Still, it ultimately fell through because of a simple concern: Wade and Paul could not agree on who would wear the number “3” jersey.
“This is the conversation we’re having. I’m like, ‘That’s my number.’ He’s like, ‘Well, that’s my number,'” recounted Wade with a humorous undertone. Both players are known to have 3 as their jersey number.
“What we going [for]? CP6? No, that ain’t it,” Paul responded with a lack of seriousness.
“[Pat] Riley didn’t pull the trigger because CP [Chris Paul] wasn’t able to wear number 3 in Miami,” continued Wade before a wave of laughter from everyone in the studio.
Apparently, the talks were already underway for Chris Paul to join the Heat before the “number 3” controversy.
“We had [been] talking for a while too,” stated CP3. “We were talking about what the team was going to look like, all those different types of stuff… I was almost in Miami. D-Wade wanted to sacrifice everything else,” Paul continued.
“Listen, I’d sacrifice not getting touches, I’d sacrifice not getting that article read, not getting the most money, but I am not giving up my number,” Wade joked.
During the era of the “Big Three,” the Heat won 1 NBA championship (2013), two conference titles (2013 and 2014), and three division titles (2012, 2013, and 2014).
